A comprehensive vaccination resource can be found at the American Association of Equine Practitioners Website. Vaccination schedules are customized by the patient’s activity, location, and age.
The basic schedule recommended by Dr. Stanislaw is as follows:
Spring Shots (March/April): Rhinopneumonitis (EHV-1 and EHV-4), Influenza, Eastern Encephalomyelitis, Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus Toxoid, Strangles, and West Nile Virus
Fall Shots (October): Influenza, Rhinopneumonitis (EHV-1 and EHV-4), West Nile Virus, Rabies
Foals in their first year require difference vaccines and pregnant mares must be vaccinated against Rhinopneumonitis in the fifth, seventh, and ninth month of gestation. Any individual concerns should be addressed with Dr. Stanislaw.
Parasite Prevention
Dr. Stanislaw recommends a deworming program for healthy horses, alternating between ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate (Strongid) every three months.
Degenerative Joint Disease Prevention
Adequan and Legend are valuable treatments used to prevent joint disease in performance horses. Adequan stimulates cartilage repair, while Legend reduces joint inflammation. Horses receive the greatest benefit from these injections when they are given monthly.
